In Memoriam: George Schoener '72

The Prep has had few supporters as loyal and loving as George Schoener ‘72, who passed away in April after a long battle with brain cancer. An active member of the Alumni Board of Governors, Mr. Schoener coached The Prep’s “mock trial” team and rarely missed a Prep football game, even as his health diminished. He was one of the most active volunteers to The Campaign for The Prep and helped secure several large gifts, as chair of the leadership division. He received the school’s prestigious Alumnus of the Year Award in 2005.

For more than 25 years, Mr. Schoener was a lawyer in Philadelphia specializing in medical malpractice and product liability litigation. He was accredited as a certified civil trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

After graduating from The Prep, Mr. Schoener earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. From there he went to Villanova University Law School where he earned his law degree in 1978.

In addition to his professional work and his time spent at The Prep, Mr. Schoener was also a very active runner, participating in several marathons. He also coached youth soccer.

“The mere mention of George Schoener’s name, even before he became ill, immediately triggered recognition, respect, and admiration on the part of anyone who heard it,” says classmate Gerald McHugh in a eulogy presented at Mr. Schoener’s Funeral Mass in the Church of the Gesu. “No one who knew George was untouched by his spirit.”

Mr. Schoener is survived by his wife Patrice, sons Michael and Stephen, daughter Kristin, his parents George and Irene Schoener Sr., five brothers, and a sister.
